A Song of Sorrow and Endless Joy

Sep 20, 2020    Lewis Roderick

In the second part of our series ‘Stories of Exile’, Lewis Roderick takes us to Psalm 126 and shows us not only the blessing of lament but also the right response to it.

On Sunday Lewis mentioned an article by Andy Crouch that helped him understand how the Coronavirus isn’t just something to ‘get through’ but rather a moment to adapt within. For those of you who’d like to read the article for yourself, here it is.

We finished our tie together reflecting on Psalm 126:

Do I need to learn to lament before the Lord?

Is this season hardening my heart, or softening it toward the gospel?

Do I need to ask the Lord for courage to continue sowing?

What is my hope? That one day, the Master of the Harvest will call the workers in from the field. They will come from every corner of the earth, not on merit, but by Christ’s blood, in the grace of God. They will enter his Kingdom and pull up a seat at the King’s table, where they will feast with him forever. There will be no more mourning, crying, pain or suffering; God will wipe every tear from their eye and finally, death will be swallowed up in Christ’s resurrection victory. We will live in the eternal life of the Spirit, the glory of the Lord will flood the earth as the waters cover tree sea. And every sorrow we’ve known will make this joy sweeter still.

We finished by listening together to Psalm 126; a song by Isaac Wardell, performed by Sojourn Music.
