What do we mean 'thanksgiving on NYE'?
“I spent a lot of 2023 without work. But two months ago, God gave me a job. Throughout it all he provided. I want to give thanks to him”
“My grandmother went to be with Jesus last September. She was elderly and her final years were difficult for her. But every day she looked forward to seeing his face. Now she’s finally home. I thank God for saving her and keeping her”
“I was worried about my GCSE exams. Especially maths! But I passed them all! Thank you Jesus.”
“We’ve been caring for our aunt for years. It’s not easy, but we’ve known God’s encouragement and the church’s love as we’ve done it. We’re thanking God today.”
“Jesus healed me. Thank you Father!”
The Psalms are full of thanksgiving.
There’s more, but you get the point: we’re called to give thanks to God. And when we do it’s for everything. Great things like the gospel and comparatively small things like a new job or better health.
But it’s all a gift from our faithful God.
So on December 31, as we look back on 2023, let’s do it with thankful hearts. If you’ve received from the Lord, come willing to tell us and let us all share in your joy. It doesn’t have to be impressive (and definitely not long). The examples above are a good length.
On the morning, as many of us as can make it will gather to sing, celebrate the gospel and thank God for his kindness to us throughout 2023. Will you help us? Chat to one of the elders ahead and come ready to speak of his goodness.
Want to say something, but still not sure if it’s helpful? Get in touch with one of the elders ahead of NYE.

The Psalms are full of thanksgiving.
- I will declare your name to my people, in the assembly I will praise you (Psalm 22: 22)
- I will give you thanks in the great assembly. Among the throngs, I will praise you (Psalm 35: 18)
- I will proclaim your saving acts in the great assembly, I do not seal my lips, as you know (Psalm 40: 9)
- I do not hide your righteousness in my heart; I speak of your faithfulness and your saving help. I do not conceal your love and your faithfulness from the great assembly. (Psalm 40:10)
